World Series of Copyrights is being replayed by Oracle and Google

indianapolis business law world series of copyrights oracle google

Six years ago a judge who presided over the trial dubbed it the “World Series” of intellectual property between tech titans Oracle and Google.

It was left in a stalemate four years ago. The judge said that there can only be “one winner”. If Oracle wins, Google will have to pay the fees for the operating system that is used in 80 percent of the world’s mobile devices.

The question is did Google cheat by using part of Oracle’s Java programming language to develop Android without a license?

For Google’s infringement, Oracle is saying that monetary damages will not be able to compensate for its loss. They also seek a court order that is “reasonably tailored” to put an end to the infringement.

RESULT: “This case has revived the possibility of using software copyright much more broadly than it had been used for the previous two decades,” said Tyler Ochoa, a professor at Santa Clara University School of Law who has followed the case closely since it was filed in 2010.
